Pratul Dube – Glorifying Overwork

Candidate No. 10

Pratul Dube,31, is a Software Engineer based out of Mumbai.

What are your official working hours and How many hours do you work?

My official working hours are from 11 AM to 7 PM, but I occasionally work a little longer (maybe a couple hours over the weekend too), when there’s a tough deadline (a couple times a year or so). Otherwise, my employer is quite benevolent and doesn’t encourage overwork.

How much me time do you get in a day? What do you do in your me time.

I usually get about an hour in the morning and about 3-4 hours of me time in the evening. I usually go outside for a walk, read, or watch devotional, spiritual or informative YouTube videos during my free time.

Are you more productive, when you work for longer hours?

Yes if it’s occasional, but definitely nope when it becomes a regular thing. I’ve worked for a bad employer in the past where overtime and working on weekends were a regular deal and happened about once a month or so. I remember being stressed most of the time, and even while working, not being able to concentrate optimally (perhaps due to being tired), which resulted in me making errors in my work. Besides, I had also developed something of an anxiety issue. These things, I’ve observed, are common to everyone I know who overworks.

Does working for long hours mean better productivity and better quality of work.

Only if it’s occasional, say once in a few months or so.

One thing that you would like to change about your work routine.

I’d like to: 1) be my own boss someday and manage my own time, and 2) work somewhere that’s making a deep, meaningful impact, even if for low/no pay.

Comments

I hate the overwork culture just like you do, and believe there’s no dignity in being a workaholic. It’s akin to slavery, and reminiscent of the initial days of the industrial revolution, when workers used to all pretty much be labourers. Imo, it’s crucial to have a good work-life balance, both for the sake of productivity and accuracy at work, and peace of mind outside it.

Aishwarya Says:

I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
