Inspirational Women Falguni Nayar

This young lady made her recent debut on the Stock Market. A woman who is a proud owner of a Unicorn Startup. Let us meet Falguni Nayar, the Founder of Nyka, which is a beauty and lifestyle retail company.Nayar is one of two self-made female, Indian billionaires.

She is a graduate from Sydenham College of Commerce and Economics and a postgraduate from the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.

In 1993, Ms.Nayar joined Kotak Mahindra Group for 19 years. In 2005, she was appointed as a managing director and exited in 2012.

In April 2012, at the age of 50, she founded Nykaa with $2 million of her own money. Nykaa was worth $2.3 billion as of 2021 bringing Nayar’s fortune to an estimated $1.1 billion. Nayar is one of 2 self-made female Indian billionaires, the other being Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw. Nykaa listed at $13 billion on 10 November 2021 making Ms.Nayar India’s richest self-made woman and is now among India’s top 20 richest people.

In 2012, when Ms. Nayar decided to quit her high-profile job of Managing Director at Kotak Mahindra Capital Company, she told Kotak Mahindra group chief Uday Kotak she was happy at the company but wanted to do something different. In the book How Uday Kotak Built A Valuable Indian Bank, Kotak recalls her telling him, “I won’t compete with you.” When he pressed her on what she wanted to do, she said, “I am passionate about doing something in Internet and beauty.”

The company turned unicorn only in March 2020, after just five rounds of funding—of which only three involved institutional investors. Nykaa is also profitable—a rarity among Indian startups.

FSN E-Commerce Ventures Ltd, the parent company of Nykaa, raised $720 million in its IPO and saw shares rise 96 per cent on its first day of trading on Wednesday. This put founder Falguni Nayar in the league of the world’s richest.“ Women need to allow the spotlight of their lives to be on themselves,” Ms. Nayar said in an interview after the trading debut. “I hope more women like me dare to dream for themselves.”
