Bullying is the intentional, aggressive imposition of power over another person. Not only an individual but also a group of people combinely can be involved in the act of bullying someone. Bullying is the use of force, threat, or coercion to abuse, intimidate, or aggressively dominate others. When people or a group of people exert force or show their power in order to dominate the other person physically, abusively, is bullying. Not necessary that bullying is possible only when someone is physically present but bullying can be done through abrupt messages, sending vulgar and harassing videos or even on calls. Bullying can include verbal harassment or threat, physical assault or coercion, and such acts may be directed repeatedly towards particular targets.
Now, we know exactly what bullying is and by whom it is done but why is it done? Some common reason why students are bullied is sometimes they are bullied because they are different, or they are weak or they don’t like socializing. It can be caused by differences in race, sexuality, religion, disabilities and abilities, weight, height or anything that creates a difference between one child and another. Students especially for them where nothing is important no feelings or emotions they don’t need a particular reason to bully anyone, just for their own fun and entertainment they bully other students just so they will look cool in front of their other friends. Students who bully sometimes have problems and are unhappy. They may be trying to make up for a lack of attention, power or love in their own lives; by bullying, they try to get these in their own lives. Students who are deprived of attention or love from their fellow friends or batch mate just so to get attention and show their power they start bullying other students. They feel superior by making others inferior. They enjoy that power of dominancy they show by bullying others. They also do this because they feel that another person is becoming more popular than they are in their group. Some students tend to hide their feelings or what they ate going through so they start bullying. Also, sometimes the cases are that they themselves are getting tourtured so they think becoming the same might stop this. Also, students having negative environment at home are frustrated , or students who are deprived of love at home or are constantly being dominanted by parents or siblings take their frustration out by showing their power over fellow students since they can’t do the same at home.
Students who ‘stand out’ as different from the norms or style from the students of their group or within their peer group are most likely to be bullied. Students can use bullying as a way to enforce group norms about how to appear and behave. Student or people in order to take revenge start bullying. Bullying can produce social and emotional problems in children Cumulative evidence has shown that bullying has acute consequences ranging from suicide, murder, absenteeism at school, and medical conditions such as faints, vomiting, paralysis, hyperventilation, limb pains, headaches, visual symptoms, stomachaches, fugue states, and long-term psychological disturbances such as anxiety, depression, loneliness, and hysteria.Boys who are victims are at a greater risk of acting out and delinquency as young adults while girls who are victims have a greater risk of experiencing poor mental health such as peer rejection, anxiety, depression, and isolation.Therefore, bullying is a serious concern and without intervention the effects are likely to worsen over time.Bullying in school is the most common type of violence among adolescents, recognized as a serious concern for students and has become a public health problem and global concern.
School is the place where students find easy target to show their dominant behavior as they find their own age group of people where they can easily tend to exert their force. So the school should start taking serious actions or measures to stop these act of bullying . School policies must emphasize on enhancing the social and emotional climate of the school by replacing detention with meditation and improving students mental resilience.
Schools must put policies in place to help their students developmental resilience to communicate appropriately with each other and to develop effective coping skills and find the meaning of their lives.
Implementing a comprehensive, evidence-based bullying prevention program is crucial to reduce and prevent bullying in schools. Use surveillance data, at all levels local, state, and national to identify school needs.
Using positive behavioral support system and behavioral managed skills, in the classroom and in the school to identify cases of bullying.
School policies should reflect a zero tolerance for weapons, discrimination, harassment, and gang activity.
The anti-bullying policies should be implemented consistently to assure students safety in all school locations.
Schools need to create a culture of intolerance for violence by enforcing all school policies consistently and fairly.
Schools must develop a professional preparation and development program for teacher and staff to help them teaching mental resilience.
School-based bullying programs should benefit from the mental health resources in schools (including the counselors, school psychologists, and social workers) in recognizing and understand the relations between the mental health of students such as depression, and anxiety and attendance and bullying problem.
Schools have to implement a systematic protocol for the early identifications of students facing challenges and crisis.
Developing and enforcing curriculum that is culturally responsive and sensitive to all students’ diversities. Bullying definition, types of bullying, who get bullied, and strategies to stop bullying should be integrated into the curriculum.
Bullying in schools is a widespread problem around the world, and no community is immune from this problem, despite the anti-bullying initiatives that implemented almost everywhere.Effective prevention bullying programs must define bullying in a clear way to the community and include as its core team, students, school staff, parents and other community members. In order to have a safe environment for students to learn, and to grow up, students must learn how to communicate with each other, resolve conflicts effectively, and learn how to be empathetic to others.
I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
