In current scenario, when the whole world is facing an unprecedented situation, people are confined inside the boundaries of their homes, every individual can relate to the brunt felt by the residents of the Annexe, as well as people who suffered during the war. The pandemic exacerbated the already existing social structures like the war. The economy is at a halt; people are losing their jobs as well as their loved ones. Many are facing shortage of resources and income. Even if you save yourself from the pandemic nobody is immune from its side effects, dissatisfaction from existing governments is increasing as well the cases of dissatisfaction inside homes. The new economic, political and social realities are creating an environment in which we have large hopes from pre-established global leadership and institutions but the question remains ‘will the help come on time?’, or we have to lose a lot before gaining the resilience to fight the worst.
A new type of discrimination has taken birth, supported by the state and even by the citizens. In Germany, hitler claimed to follow scientific facts, today also a test can outcast you from the society you have lived in for years, still the separation is justified on the grounds of public health. Many people can’t visit hospitals and are confined to small spaces but still the hope of a better future lingers around, like the residents of the Annexe dreamt of an invasion by the allied forces.
The tragic end and abrupt ending has contributed to the popularity of the book. The book is considered as an important record of the sufferings of Jews and the resistance against anti-Semitism by local population. But Anne Frank and her life is relived through her memories and vivid descriptions of the book. The book’s authenticity has been attacked several times in the past, due to its explicit content ,factual correctness and the image of the good dutch man used by the author.
Some have even gone to the extent of calling it a planted version to gain popularity and sympathy. But the vivid description of events in the book, the way the emotions are not just expressed but delved into by reason and circumstances annuls the claims which question the authenticity of the book.
The book has given birth to the biggest debate in the history of 20th century and even now this debate has its relevance, the pen versus gun. Even though the author died in her teenage years, still her legacy is intact, her memory lives, her question still breathes and gives a reflection of the past, present and future. Still many wars were fought after the second world war, genocides happen but the world isn’t as ignorant as it had become at the time of the author. She did not only raised the plight faced by her own family members but by her whole community. The author’s book is considered one of the most authentic records of suffering of Jews not only during the holocaust, but also by the restrictions placed on them, the silent suffering they faced during the course of hiding and the hopes of liberation.
