It was the year 2015 when I was preparing for my Company Secretary (herein called ‘CS’) Executive (both groups) for the December term. While preparing for the same, I realized that I was more attracted to the law papers than others. Even when the results were declared in January, 2016, I got good marks in law papers than the other papers such as Income tax or cost accounts. Even though I could not clear the exam, I was happy because I knew that I had found my fondness for law. So, in the month of June/July in the same year, I found something of my interest. I found that there was an exhibition fare where the people come from different schools and colleges to promote their institution. I planned to go to the fare. When I entered the fare , I could only see different schools ( primary & secondary) mostly boarding and I thought to myself that the fare was of no use to me & I should concentrate more for my next CS exams. Just when I was about to leave the fare, I found the poster of my law school in a corner. I quickly went over the counter and inquired. As soon as I returned home, I started searching every information about that particular institution and enrolled myself. I had not completed my B.COM degree so I decided to join for a 5-year L.L.B course for 2 major reasons viz; degree and my interest in law subjects.
My journey in law school was started on 25th August, 2016 and ended on 4th may, 2021. During my stay in the law school, I learnt that it is very important to not just know the law but how to use it effectively in daily life as well. During the college days, I became instant popular not only with my batchmates in law school but also with the seniors & juniors as well. I was not only popular in law school but with other schools like Fashion , Psychology, MBA, Literature and B.Tech was equally popular. Even after finishing college, people still call me and ask if I have connections in other departments. I laugh & answer them in positive. As all the law students know that during the 5-year course they need to do internships in some law firms so that they can also get to know the practical aspect of law as well. There were many subjects in law school like constitution, contract, family law, criminal law, corporate law IPR , international law etc. The day I started to read the family law & contract law, I was in love with both of them and I thought of practising in that field. But, as the course progressed, there were new subjects introduced and then my love for IPR began. Since then, whenever there is any seminar or webinar ( since the pandemic stuck) on any of the IPR topics, I never miss it.
My second love started during the period when we were told to intern in a law firm under an advocate of HC or SC or any district court. I have mostly done my internship in Calcutta HC during the period between May to July. During that internship period, I would visit the HC & attend all types of cases varying from murder cases to family law cases to company law cases to IPR cases. Once I was attending a cross-examination case in HC, and I suddenly realised that it was actually very systematic and different from the ones that we have been watching in Hindi movies. While attending the cross-examination, there was a lady judge who was handling the case. I liked the way she was controlling the situation whenever the respondent’s advocate would ask a leading question to the witness of the plaintiff’s. In a light conversation during the lunch break, I casually said that I had a small crush on that lady judge and from that day onwards, my friends started teasing me to the extent that whenever that lady judge would sit in another court room, my friends would call me there and tease me. On one such occasion, I was almost given a warning for contempt of court!
During the initial days of lockdown in India during the March -June period in 2020, my friends would text me that I must be missing that lady judge and one of them also send a pic of her to me and said to just look at the pic and remember the golden days. As on August 2020, I was scrolling down the LinkedIn page when I found that there was a certificate course on fashion law advocate Namrata Pahwa for 3 days on her you tube channel. Ever since I attended the 3-day certified course on fashion law, it became an obsession and I have been chasing her so that I can also practise under her & learn. I even wrote an article on the topic ‘Fashion met Law’ keeping in mind the things I learnt about the subject.
Now, I just want to practise in the area of Fashion law, I learnt recently that it is the emerging law and in future such lawyers would be in demand.
As a matter of fact, you people must be wondering that what was my 1st love? Well, it was not law or physics but it was Literature, like most people. I loved literature so much that I even ended up writing an alternate versions of Julius Caesar, Merchant of Venice, Macbeth and Pygmalion!! But, due to time constrains, those alternative versions never got finished.
I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
