Q – Quiz Shows

This article is written as a part of the #BlogchatterA2Z Challenge for the Alphabet Q. The Theme for my Challenge is The Indian Television through the eyes of a 90s kid.

Earlier days quiz was Bournvita Quiz Contest hosted by Derek O’Berian. School children participated in the same across the Country. IT was one of the shows that my parents mandatorily made me watch to improve my knowledge.

The early 2000’s had Kaun Banega Crorepati on Indian Television, which was mainly for the adults. This show was hosted by Amitabh Bachan. It was an International Format, adapted for the Indian Audience. The movie Slumdog Millionaire also had reference to this show, wherein Anil Kapoor was playing the role of Amitabh Bachan.

Along with Kaun Banega Crorepati, there were other quiz shows, which were also quiz contest. Such as Paanchvi Paas Se Tez, Kam Ya Zyada, Dus ka Dum etc. A few of these quiz shows were hosted by Celebrities, who made their debut on the small screeen such as Govinda, Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan.

There was another unique Quiz Show on Star One called as Heart Beat. The concept of the show was unique. The participant was kept in a glass box alone and had to answer the questions. The participants Heart Beat was constantly monitored and the slower the heartbeat, the longer time the contestant got the time to answer.

Kaun Banega Crorepati, revived Amitabh Bachan’s Career and was one of the shows with the highest TRP’s. It helped to increase the advertisement revenues of the Channels. Unfortunately in India, the formula for increasing the TRP of a show is not to work on the quality or make some development in the genre. But to introduce the sympathy angle.

As the seasons proceeded, a few participants in their stories discussed some social issues such as Dowry, Female Infanticide and Poverty but slowly the focus became on the same. The whole aspect of the show being a quiz show faded away.

While there are Corporate Quiz shows, that happen quiet often on News Channels, somehow it ends up looking more like a Board Meeting.

So this was about the Quiz Shows on Indian Television.
