Taking Children to workplace

I still remember, during my childhood, when my neighbor used to go to her mother’s office on one fine Saturday. Apart from that, I also visited my father’s office once or twice a year. It was nothing fancy, unlike today, just a table and desk , a ceiling fan and loads and loads of papers. I felt Privileged, like an adult, whenever I went to my father’s office. My friend’s parents were doctors, and had their hospital right on the next floor.I was always fascinated on how they could access their parents workplace every now and then.

Cut to the present, today’s day, I generally work from home, and go out only to meet people or to the Court and since the time my son was born, I do more of non-litigation and drafting work. Like every other toddler, sometimes, it is difficult for me to leave the house in his presence, so most of the times, I just keep my meetings during his school time. I have always believed, that as parents, we must provide our children with all their essential needs and their wants must be option or circumstantial. (when I say needs it depends on lifestyle of every family).

As parents it is important for us to share our day to day life with our children and what best way than to take them to your workplace once in a while. Yes it may not be feasible for all and it also depends on the nature of your profession. Depending on the accessibility that you have you should never miss out the chance to take your kids to your work place.

Children are often fascinated by the things that elders do. When they visit your office, the environment is certainly not like, how it is at home. It is entirely opposite, this same environment would then teach them how to behave in a restricted place. Yes. We do take out our children to cinema halls, malls and other social places, but there is definitely a difference between a workplace and a social place. Dress them up in formals when you take them to your office.

Once your children visit your workplace, it would also be easier for them to understand, that nothing comes for free. They can also easily relate to the fact that just as they go to school, mummy and daddy also go to office, where there are certain rules to be followed. Just like how they have a teacher and Principal in school, their parents also have bosses and superiors at their workplace, to whom they are answerable.

After your children, see your workplace, they would definitely look up to you as role models (not that they would not otherwise). I believe that instead of telling children about our day to day schedule we must try and make them a part of our schedule. That will help us in bonding more with them.

Children may be little difficult to handle at your workplace but I guess we can all handle inconvenience for a couple of hours. I have taken my son along with me for a few meetings and also done an open mic with him in the audience. I generally carry his favourit food or toys and keep the meetings in a cafe or similar place. I order his favourite finger food like french fries or something similar along with fruit juice, which he takes ages to finish. He is very overwhelmed when he goes out to eat and he understands that his Mom is working and therefore he should not disturb.

Till now the experiences were good. Hopefully in future it would be the same.

Do let me know about your experiences in the comment section.
